Born and raised in Genoa, Italy, Dr. Francesco Masala-Martínez joined the Department of Romance, German, and Slavic Studies at The George Washington University in fall 2026.


He earned his Ph.D. in Hispanic Studies, with an emphasis in sociolinguistics, from the University of Kentucky in 2017. Since then, he has taught diverse student populations at universities in Spain, Florida, Kentucky, and Tennessee.


His research interests include contemporary Migration Studies, Critical Discourse Analysis, sociolinguistics, and Ecuadorian literature.
Outside the classroom, Dr. Masala-Martínez enjoys working out at CrossFit gyms and discovering new Spanish-language films to share with his students.
