Italian Placement Exam
The Italian language program’s placement test is designed to help incoming students determine what level course to enter. Instructions will be provided once you begin the exam. Please note: You may only take the Italian placement exam once.
Who Needs to Take the Placement Test
You do not need to take a placement test if you:
- Never studied Italian in high school, and do not speak Italian at home (please enroll in ITAL 1001)
- Received a 4 or a 5 on the AP Italian exam, in which case they can enroll directly in Italian 2005 (with a score of 4) or in Italian 2006 (with a score of 5).
- If you have taken an IB exam, please contact the program for placement information.
You do need to take the placement test if you:
- Wish to take any course above first-year Italian (ITAL 1001) and have not taken any Italian courses at GW
- Have never formally studied Italian, but it is a language that is spoken at home (heritage speakers)
- Received a 3 or lower on the AP Italian exam
