Spanish

The GW Department of Romance, German and Slavic Studies offers a major and a minor in Spanish. Whatever degree path they choose, all students benefit from a rich offering of courses designed to enhance students’ understanding of the central role that the Spanish language and its literary and cultural production in Spain, Latin America, the Caribbean and the United States have played in shaping today’s world.

Students who major or minor in Spanish are strongly encouraged to spend at least one semester studying abroad in a Spanish-speaking country. In addition to providing a dynamic entry into the humanities, the major and minor can serve as the basis for graduate or professional study in numerous fields. Our seminars allow for the kind of intensive student/teacher interaction that prepares students for meaningful careers, including governance, international affairs, law, journalism, medicine and business.

"My Spanish Literature and Language degree from GW prepared me for my career as the U.S. Department of Commerce's North America desk officer. My bilingual abilities allowed me to communicate accurately when discussing U.S.-Mexico bilateral trade policy and serving as a public diplomacy speaker promoting NAFTA benefits and soliciting private sector feedback throughout Mexico."
